It has an actual functioning diplomacy system, dynamism, tons of replayability, and long/fulfilling campaigns.
There is a lot to do in this game - detailed diplomacy, land combat, sieges, watching your empires decadence and legacy, getting your objectives, choosing buildings, establishing your economy, moving around your pops and cultural conversion, navy warfare, decisions, watching your loyalty, city growth.
Granular difficulty and AI aggressivity some of which is quite dynamic throughout the campaign, along with a number of special rule options means you are likely to see significant to ca-razy variation amongst AI driven factions even with the humans playing the same factions multiple times...
Now that I've played it single player and multiplayer and have logged 100+ hours, I cannot recommend this game highly enough.
The story of Anitigonus and Demetrius utterly captivated me, so taking control of their kingdom was a must do.
I have yet to see a crash to desktop and I run it on a near minimum spec computer.
