Evoland 2 builds really well on the ideas that its predecessor put forth and though it makes endless references to other games comes across as much more than just cheap nostalgia bait.
It really is a great game in its own right with a fully realised story, likeable characters and small but detailed world to explore.
Evoland 1 felt a little messy when it came to the story but the idea of the graphics getting more and more detailed is very entertaining and that got carried over onto the second game but with a much more improved story and a better understanding of the characters.
Suddenly, sound effects emerge, pixel resolution increases, color fills the screen, and eventually, the world transitions into 3D.
Both were rock solid on my Steam Deck, aside from rare hitching and slightly longer load times in 2's future (probably due to the 3D assets) which probably wouldn't be there at all on my PC.
