Easily one of the best RPGs and straight up one of the best games I have played in my life, this game delivers with story, characters, combat, exploration, puzzles, difficulty, audio and visuals.
I'm not going to list every single gameplay mechanic that sets it apart from the OG paper mario games, but suffice to say it feels different enough to not feel like a clone.
The turn-based combat is fun but a bit grindy for my taste, and not too difficult unless you enable hard mode - then it's challenging and verging on brutal head-bashing-into-wall difficulty (see bounty bosses).
From the combat mechanics to the writing, Bug Fables is charmingly simplistic, with deceptive depth.
And the 3D graphics served me a nice memory trip back to the late 90’s-early 2000’s.
I'm only starting to notice it now, but I also really really appreciate the repeat use of leitmotif in the soundtrack.
