What players think
The recurring themes across 300 analysed reviews: what players praise, what divides them, and what to know.
These type of puzzle-based games were quite basic on the gameplay side and their major strengths were atmosphere and graphics (especially with the introduction of the CD as a new media).
Riven proves that you don’t need constant dialogue or cutscenes to tell an engaging story.
Exploration is constantly rewarded, whether you’re discovering a new location, finding a hidden mechanism or realising that something you saw hours ago was actually an important clue.
The difficulty level felt just about right; I ran into only a few snags along the way, usually more along the lines of overlooking a hard-to-spot interactive object, rather than being unable to solve a puzzle that was laid out in front of me.
The graphics are incredibly beautiful, even if they aren't as photorealistic as the original (which used actual photos for its textures) and all the wonderful music and sound effects are still there.
