I never played the games that I think inspired this, but I can tell it's a throwback to that era not just from the graphics but the general vibe of the gameplay, which I do think is a win.
Its functionality is accessible through the default controller configuration, appropriate controller icons are displayed, interface text is considered readable, and the default graphics configuration performs well on the handheld.
Stealth encourages patience, combat provides an aggressive fallback, exploration rewards curiosity, permadeath makes survival meaningful, and the 30-minute deadline ensures none of these systems can be approached without considering time.
