What players think
The recurring themes across 141 analysed reviews: what players praise, what divides them, and what to know.
Its melee combat is enjoyable but dated, its strategy is accessible but relatively shallow, and its role-playing progression is modest.
The graphics are actually pretty amazing for its time (2004) and at the same time they aren't particularly anything to freak out over.
The historical atmosphere still gives the campaign plenty of character, particularly when battles expand beyond small skirmishes into attacks against heavily defended positions.
The game wants the player to feel like a legendary medieval warrior standing in the middle of enormous battles, and that approach allows it to prioritize spectacle, combat, and heroic progression.
Also - the soundtrack, whilst it can eventually get a bit irritating, as it tells you there's an enemy just out of sight.... the soundtrack is magnificent.
Oh i recommend playing on the hardest difficulty, its VERY FUN that way.
