What players think
The recurring themes across 300 analysed reviews: what players praise, what divides them, and what to know.
There are dated elements, but underneath them is an incredibly deep RPG with an amazing combat system, fantastic characters, memorable villains, an enormous world, and a legendary soundtrack.
For a game released in 1997 , the customization is honestly impressive.
Everything from the great soundtrack by Nobuo Uematsu to the excellent story and fun gameplay, you will have a good time.
The combat starts simple but gets more interesting as you go, but keep in mind that progression isn't really fast, this game is long for a 1997 game.
The only things that are "better" than the last version are controller support and the ability to speed up the game (some summons and enemy attacks can take forever).
This runs much better on my Steam Deck than the previous (2013?) edition of FF7.
