Playing Maniac Mansion is not at all necessary in order to enjoy Day of the Tentacle, though those who have will definitely find greater connection to the game's characters, especially the Edison family.

I played the 2016 remastered version of this game because I’m not a masochist, and so my gameplay experience is likely different from those whose main experience is with the original 1993 version.
There is one section with Ben Franklin that could cause controller players some trouble, but by the time you get to that bit, you should be pretty comfortable with the controller interface.
