Despite its age, it remains a standout in the genre due to its distinct mechanics, atmospheric presentation, and the way it combines kingdom-building with warfare.
Each unit has a unique niche (pikemen are the best armored and very resistant to arrows, but are slow as $*%! and don't do as much damage as other melee units) Also, the unit lines are awesomely hammy and memorable.
