Stronghold HD (2012)

I really liked the economic system of the game, the production chain is just awesome, and you can actually man your walls and towers with soldiers; each kind of unit has particular strenghts and weaknesses (like swordmans which are really slow, can't fill moats and can't climb ladders); the campaign is fun and quite difficult (I still have to finish the last mission on easy difficulty)

There's no reworking of the graphics or anything like that, and the opening cinematic still plays in a hilariously tiny box in the middle of a great big black void.

Stronghold actually has working gameplay and thus it doesn't need to just throw more crap at the wall in hopes something sticks.

First off, the game's graphics and sound design hold up surprisingly well even today.

Stronghold grants for the military campaign alone already around 30 hours of fun, this without considering the economical short campaign and the single standing missions of both "modes", as well as the map editor and other fun that may come from multiplayer or UGC.

But there's not much here to recommend beyond the rustic medieval design of the game's interface as a whole, which still stands up to some degree despite the game's age.
