VR is definately not required for this, and it doesn't add much; but did make for a very enjoyable way to experience the story.
Exploring the mansion is a lot of fun and following the characters around is highly interesting.
This sort of game lives and dies by its voice acting, and I was impressed by the quality of the VAs.
Lighting, foley, and weather fx are good enough to create immersion, and staring really closely at fine details of the built world is never important for gameplay.
It has lots of depth for each character. its very well written.
