CTHON is one of the new retro-stylized FPS games that currently ride the recent wave of popularity of 90's nostalgia.
The sound design is okay, the guns are very loud and raw, the aliens sound creepy and kind of unnerving, although they don't immediately feel recognizable.
The strong aspects of CTHON are its nice graphics (of course if you're into low-res retro pixel art) and really good atmosphere, reminding me of System Shock with some Lovecraftian overtones.
You develop your character by equipping items that upgrade your weapons' capabilities or your own, but you're limited in how much you can carry or use based on your energy reserves and inventory space, which themselves can be upgraded with the proper pickups, or with resource expenditures at certain shops.
Overall, this game succeeds at fusing Wolfenstein/DOOM's FPS gameplay with RPG and roguelike mechanics, elements of Metroid's aesthetic, and the narrative bent of Lovecraft's cosmological outlook. $5 is more than a fair price.
Theme by theme
Every theme is scored by what reviewers actually said about it, not just whether they recommended the game.
Ranked by how many sampled reviews mention each topic. A topic sits in a column by what reviewers said about that topic; the percentage beside it is how many of them recommended the game anyway.
