You've got three jets to choose from, each with different weapons and characteristics, you've got a simple roster of recurring enemies to deal with that are easy to memorize and fun to fight against, and most importantly, responsive but simplistic controls mean it's a game you can (literally) play with just your mouse.
Just really good fun gameplay that keeps me coming back pretty much everyday for a session.
The graphics are phenomenal for being a game that takes up less than 100mb of hard drive space.
AFTERBURN is easy to pick up, hard to master due to its fluid controls that work really well on a controller or Steam Deck, it strikes that middle ground where you die without feeling demoralised, and immediately go another round until you stop dying or are satisfied with your score.
