What players think
The recurring themes across 300 analysed reviews: what players praise, what divides them, and what to know.
It's got great characters, dialogue, emotional storytelling, and a masterpiece of a soundtrack.
Chrono Trigger genuinely lives up to its legendary reputation — the time travel mechanics feel purposeful rather than gimmicky, each era has its own distinct personality, and the soundtrack is the kind you hum for days after putting the game down.
You absolutely should play this game even if it's just to experience the absolutely outstanding soundtrack.
However, the barrier to entry is low; once you toggle the graphics settings, the original brilliance outshines the port’s sterile wrapper.
The cast is surprisingly endearing given how little screen time each character gets, and the dual/triple Tech combat system keeps battles fresh throughout.
It is kind of annoying, but this is an easy way for me to play on a couch and also on my steamdeck.
